“Organic agriculture is growing a better world by leaving a legacy of healthy soil, clean water, and abundant biodiversity for generations to come.”

My name is Prof. Nkiru Meludu, and I’ve dedicated my life to championing organic agriculture across Nigeria. From my early days at the University of Ibadan in Oyo State to my leadership roles at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, I’ve witnessed how sustainable farming can transform both the land and the people who depend on it.

Empowering Communities

I founded the Youth Organic Summer School to inspire future leaders in agriculture—women, men, and youth alike. We even created an anthem, “Organic is life,” to celebrate natural farming methods and rally support.

“Organic is life, Organic is life,
Using organic standards, Organic is life
Farming without synthetic, Organic is life
For healthy farmers, Organic is life
For healthy environment, Organic is life
That is why I’m saying Organic is life”

Through workshops and local outreach, I’ve seen entire communities embrace composting, crop rotation, and fair labour practices. ©Agricultural Extension food and Nutrition Security.

Conserving Water, Combating Climate

In a world facing unpredictable rainfall and rising temperatures, I focus on water-saving techniques like rainwater harvesting and drought-wise irrigation. By prioritising soil health through cover cropping and reduced tillage, we help the land retain moisture, reducing reliance on scarce resources.

Recognitions and Achievements

My work has been honoured by the National Organic Agriculture Network (NOAN), where I also serve as a Board of Trustees member. Despite limited research grants and the challenge of translating “organic” into local languages, I remain committed to proving that organic methods can feed our communities.

Breaking Barriers, Building the Future

Some still doubt organic farming’s potential, but I believe in its power to create resilient food systems. My vision is a world where healthy soil and clean water are the norm—not the exception.
